"I know ya didn't wanna do this, ya didn't wanna have to come back only to kill again" he tells her. It was another reason he had lied about what had happened, he knew at the time it was something Carol didn't need to hear and he didn't wish to break her anymore.
He didn't like her being gone but if that was what healed her then he could suck it up, even if it was pretty lonely. He didn't want to lose her.
